When traveling, we always try to locate the best sweet treats around. So, why not do the same in our home town. We sacrificed our waistlines to give you the top ten sweet treats Calgary edition. Way too many calories were consumed to bring you this valuable information. But it was worth it and we’ll keep doing it!
We really can’t decide what our number one favorite is, it’s mostly mood dependent, so here they are, in no particular order. Our favorite sweet treats Calgary edition:
Ice Cream – Made by Marcus Ice Cream
Made by Marcus has been one of our favorite go-to places for a sweet treat in recent years. They currently have 2 locations in Calgary and both really popular. Their ice cream is made with all natural ingredients and interesting flavors. Each location has different options of signature, soft serve and vegan options. I always opt for a sundae and always get the torched marshmallow. They so good!
If you are big fans like we are, you might be interested in knowing that they have ice cream cakes. They make the perfect dessert for any occasion.
Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie – Pie Junkie
Pie Junkie has 2 locations in Calgary and we have been buying their pies since they opened. Over the years we have tried several of their pies, but recently, they added a new peanut butter chocolate pie. After stalking this pie on Instagram for a few weeks, we finally did get to try it. You know how sometimes you are disappointed when you get to try something that looked so good in pictures, well this was not the case. It is the perfect mix of peanut butter and chocolate and we will definitely be one that we keep buying again and again.
Lemon Meringue Pie – Sidewalk Citizen
Sidewalk Citizen has 2 locations in Calgary but the most well known is definitely the one in the Simmons Building in Calgary’s East Village. Over the years we have used this as a meet up spot post run partly because of the location but mostly because of the guaranteed post run treat. A good to has always been the mini lemon meringue pie. Not only is it one of their cutest treats in the display case, but it’s the perfect combination of tart and sweet and crunchy and fluffy. Is fluffy even a word that people use to describe food? Too bad, it is now.
Cruffin – Roll With It Baking Company
Recently, we discovered the cruffin. What is this you may ask? A cruffin is a hybrid of a croissant and a muffin and absolutely delicious. We found these treats at the The Farmers & Makers Market at cSPACE. Good news, our vegan friends can enjoy these treats as they are 100% vegan. They come in several flavors, but we opted for the Boston Cream and the Mylk & Honee ones. They were both great. Bad news, this market is only on Saturdays so plan accordingly.
Cronut – Patisserie du Soleil
Believe it or not, one of our most popular searches is where to find cronuts in Calgary. If that is what you are craving, Patisserie du Soleil delivers. They have 2 locations, one in downtown Calgary and one in the Woodbine area.
Soft Oreo Cookie – Analog Café
If you are a fan of the regular Oreo cookie, you will love this version. What you get is two giant soft chocolate cookies with a good amount of buttercream in between. Pure bliss. Find them at any of the Analog Café locations.
Cinnamon Roll – Alforno
Alforno Café and Bakery is one of our more recent finds here in Calgary. And, their cinnamon rolls are some of the best we have ever had. I am not sure that the picture above does it justice, but it is huge and perfect for sharing. The dough is soft and has a good amount of cinnamon and topped with a generous portion of cream cheese icing.
Milkshake – Re-Grub
On a hot day we often crave something refreshing. If you are looking for something refreshing and willing to indulge this is the place to go! They are made to order and have many decadent options to try out. Bring a friend since there is no way that you can polish one off on your own. Check out our Re-Grub review for more details.
Chocolate Almond Twist – Butter Block and Co.
Butter Block and Co, is new to us. They recently opened on 17th Avenue SW just off 8th Street. After the first few bites, we knew this had become a new favorite. The Chocolate Almond Nutella Twist is just as good as it sounds, but without being as sweet as it sounds if that makes sense. The dough was buttery, flaky and crispy in the best possible way. This pastry is very large, perfect to share with someone special or not… no judgment here.
Salted Caramel Ice Cream – Village Ice Cream
Village opened its first shop back in 2012 and now has 3 locations in Calgary. They are known for making small batch, artisanal ice cream. On a hot summer day, be prepared to wait in line for a while. But, it is well worth it. Our favorite is the Salted Caramel, however the Toasted Coconut is a close second.
If you are looking for something even richer, try out a scoop of the salted caramel ice cream in a hot fudge sundae. You won’t regret it!
Any Chocolate Cupcake – Crave Cupcakes
Crave Cupcakes has been a perennial favorite of ours for special occasions or just because for many years. The first of their 4 locations in Calgary opened in 2004, by two sisters that credit their grandmother’s chocolate cake recipe and their mother’s secret to great buttercream icing for their success. We must say that we love best about Crave above other cupcake shops really is their chocolate cupcakes. Try one with mint, peanut butter, strawberry or coconut, it is sure to please.
Kouign-Aamann – Analog Café
What is a kouign-amann (pronounced QUEEN-ah-mahn) you ask? By definition a kouign-amann is a Breton butter cake but it’s not a cake at all. it’s a rustic shamrock made of the most divinely flaky, buttery, sugar-gilded pastry. It’s no danish. Nor is it a croissant. And, it has no need for fruit or filling, allowing the butter and sugar to stand on its own. A word of caution, they can become highly addicting. Find them at any of the Analog Café locations.
Cronut – Yum Bakery
Every Sunday we head to the Calgary Farmers’ Market and one of our traditions is to get a treat for us to share. One of our go-to’s is the cronut from Yum Bakery. A few years ago, we used to read that cronuts were all the rage in New York and that people would line up for hours to be able to sink their teeth into one of these tasty treats.
Unfortunately, Bumpy’s, one of our favorite cafes closed recently. Several of the extra pounds that we carry around can be credited to our Bumpy’s muffin habit, which started over 10 years ago. Their muffins were by far the best in the city and they had too many great kinds to pick a single favorite but if we had to it would probably be one of these: choco-macaroon (find our recipe here), chocolate chip oatmeal, chocolate chip walnut, blueberry oatmeal or pb & j.

Finally, we will keep trying out new sweet treats as we find them and will report back here on anything that we feel is worth trying.
