Comery Block BBQ, a West-Tennessee BBQ and bourbon joint, recently opened in Calgary. It’s located on 17th Avenue, or the Red Mile, a strip of road running from the Stampede grounds to 14th Street that’s packed with bars, restaurants, eclectic shops and coffee joints.
When we heard that they serve Tennessee-Style Hot Chicken, we knew we needed to check it out. It’s a great space, with plenty of seating and large windows that open up on a nice day.
The Menu
To start, they have an extensive list of about 150 Bourbons and Whiskeys and a great list of cocktails. Also, they have an impressive selection of local beers on tap.
The menu has a lot of great options so it took us a few minutes to make some decisions. So to start, we ordered we ordered the Tortilla Chips with queso and pico.
For the meal, we obviously ordered the chicken. We opted for the “medium” for fear that anything more would be too hot. But, it wasn’t. Next time, we will order the “hot”.
The meat on the menu is ordered by the half pound so, easy to share. We also ordered some brisket, a side of green beans and some corn bread.
All the food was very good, but the stars of the show were the corn bread and the chicken.
Let’s not forget the very tasty house made sauces. The Memphis Gold hot mustard was particularly good.
Since we are unable to resist a good pecan pie, we had some of that too.
Happy Hour
If you are looking for a great Happy Hour, this is the place. Monday to Friday from 3 pm to 6 pm, Whiskeys are half price, all beers $5 and whiskey cocktails $4 off. Keep that in mind if you are looking to try a rare whiskey!
Comery Block has a sister restaurant in the Kensington Area called Hayden Block. They serve Texas-style BBQ. It is also very good and quite popular.
We stopped by on opening weekend, expecting there to be a few kinks, but there were none. The service was great, the food came quickly. And, the place was packed.
Comery Block is definitely a welcomed addition to the Calgary food scene. We will definitely be back.
