After many years of visiting Kauai, we finally took our first Kauai helicopter tour. It’s been on our list for a while, but I must admit, the only reason why it hadn’t happen was that I was too nervous.
While planning this latest trip to Kauai, I finally agreed that we should go ahead. We booked our private tour with Mauna Loa Helicopter Tours. And, we opted for the doors off flight. Go big or go home…
Now, this is our new favorite Kauai adventure. Yes, it ain’t cheap but it was worth every penny.
This was our third attempt. The first two bookings were cancelled due to bad weather. But, it turns out it was well worth the wait. Since it had rained so much the previous few days, there were waterfalls everywhere. Several times during the flight our pilot said “this waterfall usually isn’t there”.
The tour was so amazing. We saw probably 100 waterfalls, flew over the Waimea Canyon and the Napali Coast. Also, we flew through the clouds and got to feel the temperature changes.
A few days prior to the Kauai helicopter tour, we hiked the Kalalau Trail. And during the flight were able to see the trail from the sky. It was pretty amazing to see just how high up we had been.
What to know before you go
There are many tour companies so do your research before booking. We knew we wanted a private tour and opted for a flight with the doors off. I would highly recommend it if it is within your budget. Don’t worry about falling out, you’re strapped in very well!
Also, keep in mind that it rains a lot on Kauai. Our tour was cancelled both times while driving there. This is for your safety! If it’s something that you really want to do during your trip, book it for the first few days. This way, you still have time to reschedule. And, make sure you understand the cancellation and rescheduling policy.
Before concluding this post, I must say that this activity isn’t without risks. Although we felt completely safe and the chances of something happening are quite low, accidents do happen. On the same day that we enjoyed our tour, 7 souls lost their lives while doing the same activity. Our hearts go out to those affected by this tragedy.
