Kauai adventures for the not so adventurous

Posted: January 20, 2018 By //  by WaryTraveler 3 Comments Last Updated: January 2, 2020

It’s true, Kauai is a nature and adventure seekers’ paradise. It offers epic hikes, ziplining above the trees, limitless water sports and activities to satisfy any thrill seeker. Let’s face it, not all of us need near death experiences or adrenaline pumping sports to have a great vacation.

Here are 4 great activities that will let you experience the beauty and splendor of Kauai and stay within your comfort zone. These activities can be enjoyed by people of almost any age, only take up a few hours of your day and are dispersed throughout the island so no matter where you are staying there is something close to you.

Kayaking in Hanalei
Kayaking on Hanalei River

What to expect: A safer, more tranquil kayaking option on a river surrounded by lush vegetation, with majestic mountains in the background.
Recommended ages: 5 years of age and older.
Skills required: No previous kayaking experience is required.
When to go:  Since the river can be narrow in some areas, this activity is best enjoyed in the morning before it gets crowded.
What to bring: Sunglasses, sunscreen, water, a towel and a waterproof camera.

While in Hanalei you should also check out the Hanalei Bread Company for breakfast or lunch.

Biking in Kapa’a
Kauai
Biking in Kapa’a

What to expect: An 8.5 mile bike path steps from the ocean.  As you ride can hear the waves crashing, feel the breeze on your back and the sun on your face.
Recommended ages:  This activity is good for anyone that can ride a bike.  The pathway is in good condition and fairly flat.  For smaller children to enjoy the activity, bike rental companies have child bike trailers available for rent.
When to go: Any time, but can get crowded around mid-day.
Skills required: Ability to ride a bike.
What to bring: Shoes that cover your toes, sunscreen, water and a camera.

While in Kapa’a also you may also want to check out Java Kai for great… well everything! Seriously, they serve up a massive dose of Aloha.

Tubing

Tubing Excitement @ Tubing Kauai

What to expect: Imagine floating down the world’s longest lazy river with a few tunnels, while enjoying some of the world’s most beautiful scenery.
Recommended ages: All participants must be 5 years of age or older as per the restrictions from the tour operator.
When to go: Book a time that works best for you; Kauai Backcountry Adventures offers several daily options.
Skills required: It does not require any skills other than the ability to sit, relax and enjoy the breathtaking scenery. And not being afraid of the dark.
What to bring: Water friendly shoes to protect your feet, sunscreen, bug spray, water friendly clothing, a towel and a change of clothing for after and a water proof camera.

While in the Lihue area you should also check out Koloa Rum Tasting room for some of the best rum you can get, anywhere.

Hiking the Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail
Kauai
Hiking in Poipu

What to expect: An easy hike with incredible scenery.  You will see sand dune cliffs, limestone formations, rocky inlets, giant waves crashing and majestic green mountains in the distance.
Recommended ages: Probably 5 years of age and older since they must be able to walk on uneven terrain.  Little ones, if they fit in an infant carrier could tag along.
When to go: Anytime.  This would be a great activity to do at sunrise or sunset.
Skills required: Ability to walk on uneven terrain and around tree roots. It’s an easy hike.
What to bring: Closed toed shoes, plenty of water, sunscreen and a camera.
