It’s no secret that Kauai is known for its epic hiking possibilities. But, not everyone has the abilities or the desire to tackle some of the more challenging trails. If you are on the less adventurous side, but like trekking to see beautiful scenery, the Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail is for you. Also, it’s also a great option when it is raining in other parts of the island since the Poipu area is often sunny, even when it is raining elsewhere.
This hike is easy. On most of the other hikes that we have done on Kauai, we wouldn’t recommend bringing children. But, this one is well suited for children that are comfortable walking on their own for a reasonable period of time. Expect, the terrain is uneven and has some loose rocks and tree roots that you will need to navigate around but it’s fairly flat. Also, on parts of the trail, you will be walking on sand.
The Trail
This hike starts just beside the Grand Hyatt in Poipu. And, the best place to park is in the beach access lot next to it and make your way towards the ocean. It’s a small lot, so if you are not there early you may have a hard time finding a spot. There are several sandy paths that join up at the ridge above the beach which all eventually get you on the trail.
This trail goes from Shipwreck Beach to Punahoa Point. It’s 2 miles each way. At a reasonable pace, this could take you about 90 minutes. There are no facilities or amenities along the way. So, make sure hit the ones at the Hyatt before starting the hike.
Expect to see sand-dune cliffs, limestone formation, rocky inlets, giant waves crashing and majestic green mountains in the distance. Also, part of the trail is along the outer edge of the Poipu Bay golf course. Also, the trail is part of the Kauai History Heritage site – this is sacred to Hawaiians and therefore needs to be preserved. Be respectful.
After you have completed the hike, you might want to stop at Shipwreck Beach for a refreshing dip in the ocean. If you find a bit of courage, you could even try cliff jumping! If not, you can just watch the brave souls that do.
What to wear and bring?
Before you head out, make sure that you wear something comfortable. You don’t need hiking shoes. But, we recommend a good pair of running or walking shoes; just make sure your toes are covered.
And, bring your sunglasses, sunscreen, and water. Also, don’t forget your camera, you will want to take pictures. The views are out of this world.
It’s definitely worth it! It’s free! And, you get to see some scenery that you will not see otherwise. Plus, you get to burn off some of those vacation calories.
Wary Travelers Tip
Since you will have worked up an appetite, you’ll be looking for a refreshing treat after your hike. Hit up Anake’s Juice Bar for an açai bowl or a smoothie. If that doesn’t sound appealing, click here for our list of the best foods on Kauai.
