If you are looking for a great meal Charbar Calgary delivers. Located in the community of East Village in the historical Simmons Building, alongside Sidewalk Citizen Bakery and Phil & Sebastian Coffee Roasters.
The Simmons Building is the former home to a mattress factory that closed many years ago. In 2015, the building re-opened with its three current tenants. The building is very rustic with a lot of brick and exposed beams creating a welcoming and romantic ambiance.
Drinks
We started our meal with drinks, opting for a Penicillin and a Brooklyn. Both of these whiskey drinks combine classic recipes with a modern twist. Even non-whiskey lovers will find the Penicillin hard to resist.
Looking at the menu there were many interesting choices and we were torn and unsure as to how much food to order. After a chat with our server, we landed on two appetizers, a main and a side – all served family style.
Dinner
The first dish to make it to the table was the fried sourdough balls. Our server described it as deconstructed pizza, which pretty much sums it up. They are balls of fried sourdough pizza dough balls rolled in garlic, olive oil and oregano. And, topped with parmesan and served with a side of their homemade pizza sauce. They were very tasty!
The next dish to arrive was the day’s feature. It was little neck clams in a white wine sauce topped with some chimichurri and served with a side of beef fat fries. This was a great choice since we love clams but don’t get to enjoy them very often.
As our main dish we shared the wood fire grill 9 spiced half chicken and a side of fried brussel sprouts with honey yuzu and toasted almonds. These were an excellent choice. The chicken was moist with charred tasty skin. We had never tried fried brussel sprouts, but should have known that fried brussel sprouts would be amazing.
After looking at the desert menu, we decided to share the milk chocolate flan to share. It is a decadent combination of flavours and textures, making it a great way to finish of your meal. If you ever make it to Calgary, give Charbar a try. You won’t regret it!
For those of you unfamiliar with Calgary, Charbar is located on the banks of the Bow River. During the summer months, they have a fabulous rooftop patio. It’s the perfect place to spend a lovely evening!
Brunch
Recently, we did have the chance to visit Charbar for brunch. It was just a good as it was for dinner.
