If you are looking for a great way to spend half a day for not much money, why not take in Kapaa views on two wheels. Biking Kapaa Bike path or the Ke Ala Hele Makalae path is on our must-do list each visit to Kauai. The views are breathtaking! The pathway fairly flat, in good condition and safe for the whole family. Even if you haven’t ridden a bike in years, you will have no problems.
You can rent bicycles at several locations in the town of Kapaa. We have always rented our beach cruisers from Coconut Coasters, located just off of Kuhio Hwy and just a few steps from the pathway. The service is great and they have plenty of different types of bikes for rent. We always opt for the cruisers.
While on your ride, expect to stop several times to admire to view and to snap some pics. The scenery is some of the best you will have ever seen.
The Bike Path
Currently, the pathway is about 8.5 miles but there are expansion plans, which is very exciting news! You can expect the ride to take about 50 to 60 minutes at a leisurely pace. It can be quite windy in this area, so it might take a bit longer in one direction than the other. There are restroom facilities along the way, at Kealia Beach. There are also covered picnic tables if you would like to stop to enjoy a picnic.
To cool off, you could go for a quick dip at the various secluded beaches that you will encounter along the way. Be aware of the surf conditions, especially during winter months as it can become unsafe.
Go first thing in the morning, if you can. It will be much more enjoyable as it gets busier as the day progresses. Brush up on pathway etiquette before heading out. If you would like a reminder, it can be found here. Also, remember to bring some water as it is Hawaii and it gets hot in the sun.
Be sure to wear something comfortable. For your feet, we recommend something that covers your toes like running shoes. It tends to be a bit cooler biking along the coast, so you might want to consider bringing something with sleeves, in case you need it. And, be prepared for rain at some point as it will likely happen.
Also, bring sunglasses, sunscreen, water, a camera or phone since you will want to take pictures. The scenery is unbelievably beautiful.
And, this is a budget friendly activity. Last time we rented, it was $18 per person for 4 hours. Not only do you get some exercise, you get to take in some of Kauai’s best scenery.
Wary Travelers Tip
Stop in at Java Kai for a coffee and a snack after your first lap of the pathway. It will give you the boost necessary to do a second lap!
