Honu is our go-to place on Maui for a sunset dinner. This is certainly not the least expensive option that you will find, but it is our favorite restaurant for a fantastic meal and great view of the sunset on Maui. Honu would definitely get our vote for the best restaurant on the island (sorry to Mama’s lovers!).
As soon as we book a trip to Maui, we book our dinner at Honu online. It can get very busy so reservations are highly recommended. We typically go for an early dinner, so we can watch the sunset while enjoying one of their unique cocktails and great appetizers.
When we stay in the Ka’anapali area, we take advantage of the Maui Bus that runs from Whalers Village to Cannery Mall to get to Honu. It’s only $2 each and gets you across the street. It’s an inexpensive way to be able to enjoy some of the signature cocktails Honu offers without having to decide who will drive. If you aren’t drinking or have a designated driver, there is onsite free valet parking.
The Food
The Ahi Bruschetta is the appetizer that they are most famous for. And, let me tell you, it is worth the hype! Our other favorites are the Fried Washington Oysters (above) and the Burrata Mozzarella (below). Both are unique, fresh and pair well with their ample wine options, craft beers and cocktails.
If you want to a truly unique meal we recommend the Whole Wok Fried Hawaiian Snapper. The whole locally caught fresh fish is wok fried and served with fresh vegetables over a bed of quinoa in a black pepper sauce. It is a massive meal for one, and great for two or more depending on the size of the fish you select.
If you are looking for something less adventurous, the brick oven pizzas or the fish and chips are great options. Surely, they will satisfy even the pickiest of eaters.
Also, you must save some some room for dessert. Honu has a great selection of tasty desserts, our favorite, the Raspberry Lemon tart (below).
Wary Travelers Tip
If you make it there before sunset, ask for a table along the water’s edge. You will get a front row seat to one of Maui’s famous sunsets.
