*** We are heartbroken about the recent devastation caused by the wild fires. Over the years we have spent many hours in Lahaina, the memories will always hold a special place in our hearts. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Maui. Please support if you can. ***
Maui is definitely one of the top vacation destinations for those trying to escape of the cold. In 2019, Hawai’i Magazine readers voted Maui “Best Island” for the 7th year in a row. We have been several times and keep going back. There are too many great things to list in a single post, but this is a list of some of our favorite activities.
Whether you are in Maui for your honeymoon or for a family vacation, these are must do Maui activities. And, we guarantee that there is something for everyone on this list.
1 – Road to Hana
The Road to Hana is Maui’s number one attraction. It is 52 miles from Kahului to Hana with 54 bridges (46 are one lane) and 620 curves. Non-stop, it takes about 2 ½ hours one way but you will want to stop to see waterfalls and beaches and maybe even stop for a hike.
What to expect: The Road to Hana is Maui’s number 1 attraction. It is 52 miles from Kahului to Hana with 54 bridges (46 are one lane) and 620 curves. Be ready to stop several times to take full advantage of all there is to see.
Recommended ages: This activity is good for people of all ages.
When to go: The road to Hana can get very busy. The best time to go is early in the morning as the drive can take several hours depending on the number of stops along the way.
Skills required: Patience. It can be a very long day, with lots driving and traffic.
What to bring: water, snacks, towels, swimsuits, hiking shoes. More importantly, if you suffer from motion sickness, don’t forget your anti -nausea medication.
Wary Travelers Tip: One your way back, stop in Paia to fuel up at the Flatbread Company on delicious wood oven pizza and salad. The Maui Pineapple dressing on their organic salad is the best we have ever had!
2 – Stroll on Front Street
Lahaina is West Maui’s shopping hub. And, you will find the best of it on Front Street. Taking a stroll down Front Street is a great activity any time of the day.
What to expect: Historic ocean street with shops, restaurants, art galleries and fantastic people watching. Read our full post on Front Street.
Recommended ages: This activity is good for people of all ages. Be mindful of the young ones and the older folks in your group. The sun can be very hot during the day so make sure to stay hydrated!
When to go: It is great during the day but it really comes alive for in the evening.
Skills required: Ability to walk around. There are no set rules, take a break when you feel like it.
What to bring: Shopping money, comfortable walking shoes.
Wary Travelers Tip: While in Lahaina, make dinner reservations at Honu to watch the sunset. You will not regret it!
3 – Luau
A luau is a must. It’s a great way to get a better appreciation for traditional Hawaiian cuisine, music and dances. And, you will get to learn a little bit more about their history.
What to expect: An evening of traditional Hawaiian cuisine, music and cultural dances. Several hotels around the island offer luaus, but I highly recommend checking out the Old Lahaina Luau. Click here to ready our full post. Typically luaus start around sunset and last about 3 hrs. Advanced reservations are required.
Recommended ages: They can accommodate people of all ages.
When to go: There are many options, select the night that works best for you and fits your itinerary.
Skills required: Ability to enjoy the amazing show and great food.
What to bring: Camera and an appetite!
Wary Travelers Tip: If you are staying in Kaananpali, the Maui Bus leaves from Whaler’s village and stops at the Cannery Mall, right across the street from the Old Lahaina Luau. For $2, it’s a good way to not have to bring your car and allow you to enjoy a few drinks without worrying.
4 – Molokini Crater Snorkel Tour
One of the most popular activities for folks visiting Maui is the snorkel tour to Molokini crater. Unlike most activities on Maui, you need to hire a tour company to take you on a Molokini tour.
Recommended ages: The tour companies accept people of all ages. You don’t need to get off the boat at all if you do not want to.
When to go: The tours have several options depending on the company. Reservations are required. We recommend the Sunset Tour. Read our full review.
Skills required: To fully enjoy the experience you should be able to swim.
What to bring: Swimming attire, towel and sunscreen. Maybe a change of clothing for after the tour.
Wary Travelers Tip: We recommend taking an early morning tour to avoid the crowds. Kai Kanani offers a Sunrise Snorkel tour that arrives first at Molokini and has you back on land by 10 am.
5 – Waihee Ridge Trail Hike
The Waihee Ridge Trail is one of the more popular hikes on Maui. Approximately 5 miles round trip, this hike involves climbing uphill for about 1,500 feet. Above all, the views are spectacular. Click here to read our full post.
Recommended ages: It’s a moderate hike, so probably not good for people with limited mobility or under 12 years of age.
When to go: Go early in the morning and preferably not when it’s raining. It’s even better if it’s been relatively dry during the few days prior.
Skills required: It’s not a really technical hike, but it’s muddy.
What to bring: Good shoes are a must, preferably hiking shoes. Pack lots of water and maybe a snack. Also, bring sunscreen, bug spray and of course a camera.
