Luckily, we discovered Blyth and Burrows on Instagram. Instantly, it reminded us of one of our favorite cocktail bars Cannon Seattle. Since we were planning a trip to Portland, we knew we needed to check it out. Know for their perfectly poured cocktails and impeccable service, this is cool cocktail bar in the Old Port district of Portland, Maine.
Blyth and Burrows is named after Commander Samuel Blyth and Lt. William Burrows. These rival captains were both killed during the war of 1812 after the capture of the HMS Boxer, just off the coast of Maine. No surprise, you will find that the décor and style of the bar fits to the theme while being stylish and comfortable.
In reality, Blyth and Burrows is really three bars in one. As you walk in, from the entrance on Exchange Street, this is bar number 1. The interior is cozy with lots of ambiance. On the back wall, there is a large and well stocked bar.
If you keep walking, you will come up to a few steps that will lead you to second bar. It has an understated nautical theme and a second bar that also serves as an oyster bar. At the back, there is a bookcase that looks suspiciously like a door. Try to open it! It may or may not lead you to the secret bar downstairs with a completely separate cocktail list and, secret exit in the alley. Hint: This is the third bar. It is more casual, with more of a crew quarters feel. They even have a movie projected on the wall.
While there, we sat in the second bar. Very cozy and comfortable, it’s great place to sit and chat. The cocktail list is original and extensive. After much debate, we ordered a “Summer in Sardinia” and a “Ship, Captain, Crew” (Featured Pic). Since it was a really hot and humid Maine summer day, AC and a refreshing drink was top priority. So, the “Summer in Sardinia” was the prefect choice, not too sweet and very refreshing. But, the Ship, Captain and Crew wins the prize for presentation. Served it in a small bottle, with the pecan wood smoke, still visible make it quite the unique presentation. And, it’s the perfect combination of sweet and smoky.
Also, we should mention that they do serve some food. But, we stopped by after eating a large pizza at Otto, so we didn’t taste any of it.
If you are planning a visit to Portland definitely add this to your list of place to check out. We almost didn’t make it since we were tired after a long day of sightseeing. What a mistake that would have been! Blyth and Burrows is upscale without being snooty. Different without being gimmicky. It’s definitely worth ducking in for a drink or two.
Finally, for those in the Portland area, this is a great place to meet up with friends for a low key evening or a date.
