We recently hosted a party at our home and this French Onion Chip Dip was a hit. When entertaining, we love to make everything from scratch if possible.
This french onion chip dip is super simple to make and pretty healthy as far as dips go. It tastes phenomenal and an absolute crowd pleaser. It just requires a bit of patience so you can make perfect caramelized onions.
I think one of my favorite things about this dip recipe is that it reminds me of the chip dip I grew up eating as a kid, just a bit more sophisticated. If you have the time, it’s worth the extra effort to make everything from scratch. You can make it a day or two in advance, and is worth the effort we promise!
French Onion Chip Dip
Ingredients
Roasted Garlic
- 1 head garlic
- 1 tbsp oil
- 1 pinch salt
- 1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper
- 1/4 tsp dried thyme
Caramelized Onions
- 2 large onions thinly sliced
- 1 tbsp oil
- 1 pinch salt
- 1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper
- 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar
Dip
- 2 cups greek yogurt
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise or Miracle Whip
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire
- chopped fresh parsley
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350° F.
Caramelized Onions
- Place thinly sliced onions into a Dutch oven.
- Add oil, balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper and stir to coat.
- Place the Dutch oven with lid in the center rack of the oven. Cook for 15 minutes and then stir. Keep cooking and stirring every 15 minutes until the onions are a deep golden brown color.
- Once removed from the oven and cool, place on a cutting board and chop to a small dice.
Roasted Garlic
- Peel most of the paper off the garlic.
- Trim about 1/4 inch off the top of the head of garlic to expose the tops of the garlic cloves.
- Place garlic head on a sheet of aluminum foil.
- Drizzle 1 teaspoon of oil over the exposed surface of the garlic, letting the oil sink down into the cloves. Also top with salt, pepper and thyme.
- Wrap the garlic in aluminum foil.
- Place in the oven and let cook for about 45 minutes.
- Remove from oven when garlic is soft to the touch
- One cooled, squeeze the bottom of the garlic head to push all the amazing garlic out. Press with a wooden spoon or fork to make a paste.
Dip Assembly
- In a medium sized bowl, combine the greek yogurt and the mayo.
- Add in the onion powder and the Worcestershire.
- Finally add the cooled onions and garlic.
- Combine well.
- Garnish with chopped fresh parsley.
- Enjoy!
The dip isn’t very garlicky but it definitely adds another dimension.
The caramelization of the onions is not to be rushed. Yes, it is a long process, but the end product is well worth it.
You’ll want to serve this dip with fairly thick chips. I usually opt for a kettle chip of some variety that can hold up to the thick dip.
