Best Sugar Cookie Recipe

Every baker should have a go-to sugar cookie recipe in their arsenal. For me, it isn’t the holidays without a batch or two. It’s a really versatile cookie that is perfect for any occasion.

Sugar cookies have been around for a long time. Some claim that the origins of cookies date back to the 7th century in Persia, along with the cultivation of sugar. So as you can imagine, there are many variations out there.

And, over the year, I have tried many but this is simply the best sugar cookie recipe that I have ever made. Plus, these days, you can find cookie cutters in every shape imaginable. So, have fun with it!

Sugar Cookie Recipe

 Simply the best sugar cookie recipe.

Cook Time 10 minutes minutes
Refrigeration 45 minutes minutes
Total Time 30 minutes minutes
Servings 3 dozen cookies
Calories 153kcal

Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter softened
  • 400 grams sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 600 grams flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder

Instructions

  • In a stand mixer, with the paddle attachment, cream the butter, sugar, salt and vanilla until light and fluffy.
  • Add eggs one at a time, making sure that the first egg is combined before adding the second one.
  • Add milk slowly.
  • Add flour and baking powder and mix until just combined.
  • Make a disc out of the dough, wrap with plastic wrap and chill for about 30 minutes.
  • Roll out dough on a floured surface.  The dough should be about 3/8″ thick.
  • Use your favorite cookie cutters to cut out shapes.
  • Place cookies a lined baking sheet with either parchment paper or silicone baking mat. 
  • Preheat the oven to 350° F.
  • Chill again for about 15 to 20 minutes.  Cookies should keep their shape if you pick them up.
  • Bake for about 10 to 12 minutes or until cookies are a light golden brown around the edges.
  • Let sit for a few moments before transferring to a rack to completely cool.
  • Decorate with your favorite icing and sprinkles.

Notes

  • If using salted butter, omit the additional salt.
  • This dough stores well in the fridge for up to 3 days.
  • These cookies can be frozen for up to 3 months.

These cookies can be decorated with colored sugar, icing, sprinkles, or a combination of these.  Let your creativity take over!

      Yes, you can! I have made these with almond milk and you couldn’t tell the difference.
