Acai Bowl Recipe

One of our favorite things to eat while visiting tropical locations is an acai bowl. What is acai?  It is a delicious and powerful berry found in Brazil’s Amazon. The Acai berry has more than 5 times the antioxidant power of blueberries.  Here, acai berries come not as a whole fruit, but as frozen puree. And it can only be found in the freezer section of some grocery stores. This is a frozen treat that you can feel good about eating!

I have attempted to make acai bowls at home many times, but I couldn’t get the consistency just right.  After many tries, I think I’ve got it and I’m going to share my tips here.  Once you have figured out the ratios, it’s super easy to make at home.   

Acai Bowl Ingredients

You need the following ingredients: 

Frozen acai pouch – the pouches that I have found are pretty small so if I am making a meal out of the acai bowl, I’ll use two pouches.  

Milk – any kind works, I used almond/coconut milk 

Nut butter – any kind, I used peanut butter but I’m sure that almond butter would be very good too 

Honey or agave – I had honey, so I used that 

Toppings of your choice – anything you like, some of my favorites are banana slices, flax seeds, hemp hearts, berries, coconut, cacao nibs, chocolate chips or granola – Anahola Granola is the best! It is 100% made in Hawaii.  If you are visiting on of the islands, you can buy it at Costco, for the others you can order it from their website or from Amazon.

Instructions: 

1 – Put the frozen acai, a splash of milk and the nut butter in a blender.  I made enough for 2 people so I used 4 pouches.  I used a tablespoon of peanut butter and a ¼ cup of milk. 

2 – Blend everything at really low speed until everything appears mixed and there are no clumps of frozen acai left.   

3 – Find a bowl and scoop the blended mixture into this bowl. 

4 – Top the mixture in the bowl with your favorite toppings.   

5 – Drizzle with either honey or agave. 

6 – This is probably the most crucial step. Get a spoon and enjoy!

    You mention the acai pouches are small how many ounces is each one?
